Hochkar
A high-altitude, snow-reliable resort in the Eastern Alps. Sporting runs, short transfers, and terrain that suits club training.
The Eastern Alps without compromise on terrain
Hochkar is one of the highest larger resorts in the eastern part of Austria. It is not huge, but it has a sporting character and a location that gives it good snow reliability.
The official winter profile lists 19 km of groomed runs, seven lifts and cable cars, and a ski area at roughly 1 300 to 1 790 m.
Loko view: the compact high-altitude resort is often more practical for training than a resort with a hundred kilometers of slopes, between which we would spend half the day traveling.
What makes Hochkar good for training
The slopes are varied, but the whole area remains fairly compact. This lets us switch the type of training without long transfers. With good organization, we can combine free technical runs, gates, and easier slopes for younger groups.
The sporting character of Hochkar can be felt in the pitch and the layout of the runs. Those changes in terrain are a good test of whether a child really has the technique down, or only manages it on one familiar slope.
What we can train here
- technical runs,
- slalom,
- giant slalom,
- rhythm and working with changes in pitch,
- riding at higher speed,
- children's independence in a compact resort.
Elevation and snow
Eastern Austria can be changeable during milder winters, but Hochkar has the advantage of higher altitude compared with lower-lying resorts. For the club, this is especially important on dates when we need a realistic chance of completing the planned volume.
Children and training groups
The area also has children's zones and easier runs, so we can operate in parallel with different performance groups. Younger children do not have to ski the same slopes as older ones, but the whole club still stays close together logistically.
Practical info
Hochkar is reached by a mountain road from Göstling. In winter, you need to expect mountain conditions and, in bad weather, winter traffic restrictions as well. During training camps, we therefore watch the forecast and current traffic information just as closely as the state of the runs.
